Monitor Audio - Gold 50 6G (pair)
Compact Speaker, Zero Compromises
Compact speakers ask you to make a deal. You get the placement flexibility and the footprint that doesn't dominate a room — and in return, you accept thin bass, a soundstage that stops at the speaker edges, and the persistent sense that you're hearing a reduced version of the music. The compromise is so routine it's become an assumption about the category.
Why We Chose the Gold 50 6G
We chose the Gold 50 6G because Monitor Audio refused to honour that deal. A 6-inch HDT C-CAM bass-mid driver and the MPD III tweeter — the same transducer family found in Monitor Audio's flagship Hyphn — deliver scale and resolution that has no business coming from a cabinet this size. This is a speaker that disappears into the room and fills it at the same time.
What the Specs Won't Tell You
Midrange Precision That Compact Speakers Never Deliver
The MPD III tweeter uses a folded aluminium diaphragm based on Air Motion Transformer technology, refined with improved geometry and a lower-distortion diaphragm profile. The result is that drum rolls arrive as a series of distinct, controlled strikes rather than a blur of noise, vocals are locked in space with unusual clarity, and the leading edges of notes start and stop with an accuracy that standard dome tweeters can't match. High frequencies extend to 60 kHz. What you hear is air, space, and nothing being rounded off.
Bass That Earns Its Cabinet Size
The 6-inch HDT C-CAM bass-mid driver uses a hexagonal diaphragm pattern that stiffens the cone without adding mass — the result is a driver that moves fast and digs deep. HiVe II port tuning controls bass output with unusual precision for a ported design, with in-room extension reaching 44 Hz. In a properly sized room, the Gold 50 6G doesn't sound like it needs a subwoofer. It sounds like it already has one.
Placement Flexibility Without Sonic Penalty
The Gold 50 6G is the most versatile model in the Gold 6G range — it pairs directly with the ST-2 stand for traditional stereo use, integrates cleanly as a surround channel in a larger system, or anchors a compact two-channel setup in rooms where a floorstander would overpower the space. It rewards quality amplification, and when it gets it, it performs at a level well above what the cabinet dimensions suggest.
Expert Consensus
The Audiophile Man — Paul Rigby awarded the Gold 50 6G a 9/10, noting that compared to similarly-priced competition, the Gold 50s "sounded more exciting, more engaged" and that they "really pulled you into the performance." Rigby highlighted midrange precision, bass control, and upper-frequency detail as standout traits, concluding there is "a sense of rightness in terms of the upper midrange, a freedom and detail that makes listening to music a real joy."
The Audio Two Verdict
The Gold 50 6G is the speaker we recommend when someone says they want serious high-end sound but can't fit — or don't want — a floorstander in the room. This is not a compromise product. It is a fully resolved, carefully engineered loudspeaker that happens to be compact. It rewards quality amplification and careful placement, and it will outperform speakers that cost significantly more if the system around it is matched properly. That matching is exactly what we do.
