Rega Aethos Integrated Amplifier
Hear the music build without losing the details that drew you in.
More scale should not mean less detail
A bigger sound should bring you closer to the music, not bury its finer parts. When a recording gets busy, the bass line should remain easy to follow, the vocals should stay distinct, and the quieter layers should still have room to breathe. It is not simply about playing louder. It is about keeping the character, energy and space of the performance intact, from a spare acoustic recording to a densely layered mix.
An analogue amplifier built around the whole performance
We chose the Rega Aethos for its combination of drive and insight. It brings weight to the rhythm without making the small changes in a singer's voice feel secondary. Its dual-mono design pairs a fully discrete Class A FET preamp with a 125-watt-per-channel Class AB power stage. Regulated supplies for sensitive amplification and driver stages, plus four Sanken output transistors per channel, support that combination of detail and drive.
The Aethos is an analogue, line-level amplifier. A streamer, CD player or external DAC with RCA line outputs can connect directly. There is no built-in DAC or phono stage, so digital-only sources and turntables without a built-in phono stage need the appropriate external component.
What the Specs Won't Tell You
Keep the bass line clear when the music gets busy
Bass should carry a tune, not just add weight. Follow the notes beneath a layered chorus, the shape of a double-bass phrase or the pulse of an electronic track. As the rest of the recording builds, listen for whether those notes stay distinct rather than becoming one broad thump. The Aethos's dual-mono power-amplifier design uses four output devices per channel, with rated output specified for both channels working together. The useful test is control through the whole passage, not simply the impact of its biggest hit.
Hear the voice inside a complicated rhythm
The singer should remain expressive without the rhythm section stepping aside. Choose a track where the vocal and accompaniment are doing different things, then follow the changes in phrasing and tone while keeping hold of the beat. The discrete Class A preamp and regulated sensitive-stage supplies are designed to preserve those small signal changes before the output stage drives the speakers. The Aethos's clear, direct character makes this interplay a useful focus for an audition. It is not our choice simply to soften an already sharp system.
Stay connected at evening volume
Turning the music down should not make the performance lose its focus. Set the volume where you normally listen later in the evening and follow a centrally recorded voice. Listen for a stable position between the speakers and the subtle changes that make the delivery feel human. Rega uses close-tolerance components in the preamp to reduce dependence on the volume potentiometer's left/right tracking. That addresses channel balance, helping make quiet listening a meaningful part of your audition rather than an afterthought.
What the Aethos reviews found
What Hi-Fi? praised the Aethos's orchestral authority, clear voices and ability to keep complex rhythms coherent. It described a slightly lean balance rather than added warmth, and advised care with bright or aggressive sources and speakers. It also noted warm operation and a remote volume control that could be too quick for fine adjustments.
Hi-Fi Choice's 2024 integrated-amplifier group test highlighted strong bass drive together with delicate vocals and clear organisation of busy music. Its comparison described a clean, smooth presentation, but less warmth than the valve and Class A amplifiers in that particular group.
The Audio Two Verdict
The Aethos suits listeners who want musical weight without giving up clarity, rhythm or expression. The appeal is not tied to a particular genre. It is the ability to follow the bass, hear the phrasing and stay engaged as a recording moves from intimate to full-scale. Pair it with a source and speakers that complement its clear, direct presentation rather than expecting it to add warmth to an aggressive system.
Moving up from the Elicit Mk5? That amplifier already borrows the Aethos's FET preamp design, so the decision deserves more than a comparison of 125 versus 105 watts. We would compare them through the same source and speakers, using music you know. Listen for bass definition, stable instrument positions and quieter details remaining clear as the music builds.
Tech You Can Hear
| What You Hear | Why It Happens |
|---|---|
| Large musical peaks keep their impact without burying individual bass notes | Dual-mono power-amplifier design with four Sanken output devices per channel and 125 W into 8 Ω, both channels driven |
| Small changes in a voice remain easier to follow | Discrete Class A FET preamp with regulated supplies for sensitive amplification and driver stages |
| The singer is less likely to drift to one speaker at quiet levels | Close-tolerance preamp components control left/right level and tracking with less reliance on the potentiometer |
| Headphone listening switches the main speakers off | Front headphone socket with speaker switching performed by the output mute relay |
| Stereo and multichannel playback can share the same front speakers | Switchable Direct Input bypasses the internal preamp and volume control for a compatible external volume-controlled preamp or processor |

Making It Work in Your System
Connect the sources you enjoy
Build around the right analogue connection. For records, use an external phono stage suited to your cartridge, or a turntable with a suitable built-in phono stage. For digital music, use a streamer, CD player or DAC with RCA analogue outputs. Optical, coaxial and USB audio cannot connect directly to the Aethos.
The separate Record input supports monitoring a recording device, while Record and Record Link outputs stay at a fixed level. The preamp output can connect to a compatible external power amplifier or powered subwoofer. If you use both headphones and a subwoofer, we will check how that combination mutes rather than assume headphone insertion silences every output.
Integrate with an AV system carefully
Direct Input lets a compatible external preamp or AV processor control the Aethos's power amplifier. It bypasses the internal preamp and volume control. The external device must control the level. Do not connect a fixed-output CD player or DAC directly to Direct Input, because unexpectedly high playback could damage speakers or hearing.
Allow space and check everyday control
Give the amplifier room to work comfortably. Allow for its 17.5 kg weight, full-width case and rear plugs when choosing a shelf. Keep at least 10 cm of ventilation space around the amplifier, leave both side heat sinks exposed and do not stack equipment on top or close it into an unventilated cabinet. Rega specifies 4–16 Ω speaker connections but warns that sustained high levels into lower impedances can cause excess heat and thermal shutdown, so speaker matching still matters.
During your audition, try the remote at your usual listening level as well. Its volume adjustment can be quick, so checking fine adjustments is part of making sure the amplifier suits everyday use.
