REL S/550 Subwoofer

The right high-performance subwoofer can make the whole system feel like it moved up a class.

When Better Speakers Still Need a Stronger Foundation

A good speaker system can do many things well and still leave the room feeling smaller than it should. The speakers may image beautifully, the amplifier may be capable, and the source may be strong, but without the right low-frequency foundation the system can still miss scale, ease, and emotional weight.

That is where a serious REL becomes more than an add-on. It can change how the entire system breathes.

The First Serious Step Into Serie S

We chose the REL S/550 because it brings the Serie S approach into a manageable cabinet size while still delivering a major performance step beyond the T/x range. It uses a 10-inch CarbonAlloy active driver, a 12-inch down-firing passive radiator, and a 550-watt Linear Class D amplifier.

It also includes REL’s High Level Neutrik Speakon input, LFE RCA and LFE XLR connections, AirShip Direct wireless compatibility, and support for stereo pairs and line-array use. That makes it a serious upgrade path for better two-channel systems and theatre systems that need more than basic subwoofer output.

What the Specs Won't Tell You

It Can Make the Main Speakers Feel More Expensive

The S/550 does not just add bass underneath the system. When it is placed and tuned properly, it helps the speakers sound larger, more relaxed, and more complete.

This is why a Serie S upgrade can sometimes do more for an existing system than changing speakers too quickly. The room gains foundation, scale, and ease before the main speakers are asked to do everything on their own.

Music Gains Space and Authority

The CarbonAlloy driver, passive radiator, and amplifier platform give the S/550 enough speed and control for serious music listening. Bass notes gain texture and body, but the real change is the realism it brings to voices, acoustic instruments, and the space around them. Once a REL is set properly in a system, you notice it immediately when it is turned off.

Theatre Gets Impact Without Losing Refinement

With LFE RCA and XLR inputs, the S/550 can support theatre systems while still keeping the high-level music connection in play. That means movie soundtracks gain pressure and scale without forcing the system into a theatre-only setup.

The Audio Two Verdict

The REL S/550 is the model we would start with when a better system deserves a serious subwoofer upgrade. It belongs with quality floorstanders, better bookshelf speakers on proper amplification, and mixed-use systems where music quality cannot be sacrificed for movie impact.

This is the point where REL becomes a system multiplier. In the right setup, the S/550 can make an already good system feel larger and more emotionally engaging than a simple speaker swap might suggest.
